FLUORESCENT PINK

Fluorescent Pink – All Grown Up
by Emilyn Neri Eto

When we think of fluorescent pink, we think hilighters from school days, maybe fluoro pink sweatshirts from the 80’s, but on a daily level, we think of the garage sale sign stapled on the phone post, the band flyer at the coffee shop. It’s LOUD, obnoxious and says look at me dammit, I want your attention!

I must say I have a new found admiration of this noisy color. The fact that the glow is actually emitting electromagnetic radiation because it was sort of zapped by radiation is pretty darn phenomenal. On another nerdy note, fluorescent pink dye injected in your circulatory system can being used for “hilightling” smaller tumors doctors might miss during surgery. Removing these tiny tumors has prevented the tragedies of cancer from recurring. Nerds rock.

So is it a color in which function follows form? This is no longer the case.

A revival has taken shape in the form of wallpaper and printed canvas bags. Why does it feel new, fresh and sophisticated?? My key observation - this screaming color always seems to be neutralized with low key, conservative, sometimes boring neutrals. Fluorescent pink with tan is gorgeous – exciting yet tame, natural and sophisticated. Fluorescent pink with burgundy is reminiscent of Miu Miu’s golden days – an unexpected pair, compatible because these two are related on the color wheel, but balanced because as friends one is the Leo and the other, the Virgo - like Thelma and Louise, Lavern and Shirley...

So then may we say that this wild child color has matured? Absolutely! As we embrace the fluorescent pink adult back into our home furnishing and wardrobes, we are reminded of the words of Brigette Bardot – “It’s sad to grow old, but nice to ripen.“
